About this deal

It wasn’t that long ago that a game being based on a familiar media property – whether that be a book, film, comic or video game – would simply be lazily layered onto a roll-and-move style design. This takes a lot of planning – and is made more complicated by the fact that you cannot “un-mix” cards played to a side of your palette.

My beef with the game in this vein is that there is not a player aid OR this information isn’t printed on the palette board for easy reference. You might get a wild card to take any action of your choice (more on this in a second) OR you will be given the option for a specific action such as playing a paint onto your palette or drawing a random art supply card from the top of the deck.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. These cards each have a color and a paint brush type and are played onto a player’s paint palette in front of them to be used.

This is really a race game which is not my favorite type of game, but the theme and the fact that there are “chill” cards make it worth your while.

The features to be painted are all named with the turns of phrase that Bob Ross is famous for – Happy Little Trees, Fluffy Clouds and Wondrous Water, for example. You even score bonus points if you have a technique card used in the feature or if you happen to paint faster than the master, Bob Ross, himself. Players collect color cards, play them to their Palette, and then use them along with a brush from their hand to paint features on the active Painting. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games!

If you want to paint with Bob Ross, you need to be chill, so whoever reaches maximum chill first in Bob Ross: Art of Chill Game wins. Each player pulls a random slip of paper; then all players have 30 seconds to turn their scribble into a representation of the chosen word. You don’t have to be a great artist to play Happy Little Accidents, but with only 30 seconds to draw, you do need to think quickly to make something recognizable. Take one of the large double-sided painting cards, place it on the easel, and place Bob on the first space on the painting track.
